His career included service in the US House of Representatives (Democrat, Ohio, 1812–16) and as an Ohio Supreme Court judge (1816–22). As postmaster general (1823–9), he streamlined the national postal system. He was named to the US Supreme Court by President Andrew Jackson (1830–61). |
