| biography:
| US soldier and senator, born in Scott Co, Kentucky, USA. A lawyer who helped form the Republican Party in Illinois, he commanded a Union division at Stones River (Murfreesboro) (1862) and Chickamauga (1863). In a long post-war career, he served as Republican governor of Illinois (1868–72) and later in the US Senate (Democrat, 1891–7). He ran for president as a minor party candidate in 1896. |
