| American soldier and public official, born in England, UK. He emigrated to Massachusetts c.1633, and as a militia leader he broke the power of the Pequot Indian tribe with an attack on an encampment at Mystic, CT (1637), in which more than 600 Pequots, including women and children, were slaughtered. He later served as a magistrate and as deputy governor of Connecticut. |
