| biography:
| Artist, born in Rutherford, New York, USA. He trained and worked as an architect before studying art at Pennsylvania Academy, Philadelphia, and the Art Students League of New York. After travelling in Europe (1905–10), he was involved in the Stieglitz circle, an avant-garde movement. Well known for his water-colours and etchings in an extremely individual style, his early work was in the manner of Whistler, but his later works are adapted from Cubist concepts. |
