| Australian statesman and prime minister (1975–83), born in Melbourne, Victoria, SE Australia. He studied at Melbourne and Oxford, and in 1955 became the youngest MP in the House of Representatives. He was minister for the army (1966–8), defence (1969–71), and education and science (1968–9, 1971–2), and became leader of the Liberal Party in 1975, and prime minister in a Liberal–National coalition. His government was defeated in the 1983 elections, and soon after he resigned his parliamentary seat, becoming a farmer in Nareen, W Victoria. He has also become involved in international affairs, particularly as a member of the Commonwealth Group of Eminent Persons which worked to replace apartheid in South Africa. |
