| Pioneer and wool merchant, born in Stoke Damerel, Devonshire, SW England, UK. In 1789 he emigrated to Australia, where he became leader of the settlers in New South Wales. He inspired the Rum Rebellion (1808–10) in which British soldiers mutinied and imprisoned the governor, William Bligh. He was banished to England in 1810, but returned in 1816 and made a fortune in the wool trade. He later became a member of the New South Wales Legislative Council (1825–32). |
