| British writer and politician. He served as Liberal MP for Tyneside (1906–18) and became parliamentary secretary to the Board of Trade (1911–15) and a member of the Privy Council (1915). A polymath, he was a Shakespearian scholar, literary critic, and social scientist, and wrote numerous books on a variety of subjects. He also worked with Charles Bradlaugh on National Reformer (from 1884), becoming editor (1891–3). |
