| Naval architect, born in Portsmouth, Virginia, USA. He reconditioned the hull of and constructed an armoured deck shield for the CSS Virginia (formerly the USS Merrimac) (1861–2). As a Confederate naval constructor (1862–5), he created plans for more than 40 ironclad or partly armoured vessels. |
