| biography:
| Investment banker, born in New York City, New York, USA. He studied at Princeton (1948), took a graduate degree at Harvard (1950), and joined Goldman, Sachs & Co, where his father was a senior partner. He himself rose to partner (1956) and senior partner (1976). Named senior chairman of the firm (1990), he continued Goldman, Sachs's traditionally conservative policies. A Marine Corps veteran (1942–6; 1951–2), he also served as a Princeton trustee. |
