| Physicist, born in Ardrossan, North Ayrshire, W Scotland, UK. He studied at Glasgow, where he was an assistant to Lord Kelvin. He then became a lecturer in mathematics at a teachers' training college, where he carried out research on light passing through electromagnetic fields, and discovered the effect that is now named after him. |
