| Aerial photographer and archaeologist, born in Hereford and Worcester, WC England, UK. He studied at Cambridge, and was successively curator, director, and professor of aerial photographic studies there (1948–80). Trained as a geologist, he became involved in the development of a unique university department with its own aircraft, pilot, and servicing facilities, establishing a valuable photographic archive. The often spectacular results were published in the Journal of Roman Studies (1951–77), the journal Antiquity (1964–80), and in a sequence of books. |
