| Catholic prelate, born in Cleveland, Ohio, USA. Ordained in 1937, he earned a doctorate in theology (1942), taught canon law, and held administrative posts in the Cleveland diocese, becoming auxiliary bishop and vicar general (1953). As Archbishop of Philadelphia (1961–88), he played a leading, largely conservative role among American prelates at the Second Vatican Council, and was president of the National Conference of Catholic Bishops (1971–4). |
