| Australian statesman and prime minister (1941–5), born in Creswick, Victoria, SE Australia. He was active in trade union work, and edited a Perth newspaper. In 1928 he entered parliament, became leader of the Labor Party (1934), and was prime minister during most of World War 2. He organized national mobilization during the Japanese war, and died in office. |
