| Religious leader, born in New York City, New York, USA. A Paulist priest who was editor of the Catholic World (1904–22), during World War 1 he helped to organize the bishops' group known as the National Catholic War Council. As general secretary (from 1919) of its successor, the National Catholic Welfare Council (later, Conference), he was a respected voice for Catholic interests and social reform. He was made a monsignor in 1936. |
