| biography:
| Painter, born in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, N England, UK. He studied at Sheffield College of Art and at the Royal Academy Schools, and held several teaching posts, including principal lecturer at the Chelsea School of Art. He won an international Young Artists Prize in Tokyo in 1964. In America in the same year he met ‘Colour Field’ painters such as Morris Louis, and turned to hard-edge abstraction using broad, freely painted rectangles of rich colour. |
