| biography:
| Engineer and US governor, born in Havana, Cuba. Born during his American parents' business trip, he became an engineer, forming J H S Engineering Co (1965–82) and teaching at Tufts (1966–82). As governor of New Hampshire (Republican, 1983–9), he opposed taxes, recruited new businesses, and supported the controversial Seabrook nuclear plant. As President Bush's chief-of-staff (1989–91), he offended many with his brusque manner, became the centre of several controversies, and was asked to resign. For a time he appeared as a television news commentator. |
