| Missionary and educator, born in Painesville, Ohio, USA. A Congregational minister, he devoted his life to missionary work. In Bulgaria (1874–91) he directed the American College and Theological Institute, and in Salonika, Greece (1894–1931) he was founding director of the American Farm School (1902–27), which is still an important institution for training young Greeks in methods of modern agriculture. |
