| biography:
| British sociologist. He studied at London, and taught at Leicester (1957–60) and Cambridge (1960–9) before being elected fellow of Nuffield College, Oxford (1969). He is an authority on the class structure of advanced industrial societies, and has developed a model which distinguishes between 10 main social classes. His studies of relative social mobility indicate that, despite increased prosperity and better education, equality of opportunity between classes in the UK has not improved since 1945. |
