| Publisher and consumer products executive, born in Arkansas City, Arkansas, USA. He founded Johnson Publishing Co (1942) and launched the Negro Digest (1942), a successful compilation modelled on the Reader's Digest but aimed at African-Americans. That was followed by Ebony (1945), a breakthrough vehicle for national advertisers to target black middle-class markets. His other corporate interests included radio stations, books, and cosmetics, and for many years he was known as the richest African-American. |
