| Linguist, born in Hattingen-Ruhr, Germany. He studied at the Universities of Cincinnati and Michigan (1954 PhD). A specialist in linguistic anthropology, his extensive list of publications include Language in Social Groups (1971) and Discourse Strategies (1982). He was a professor of anthropology at the University of California, Berkeley. |
