| Archaeologist, born in Shortlands, Kent, SE England, UK. He studied at Cambridge, where he taught from 1935, serving as professor of archaeology (1952–74), and was Master of Peterhouse (1973–80). His Archaeology and Society (1939) and World Prehistory (1961, 1977) pioneered the use of the archaeological record to document the economic and social life of prehistoric communities. |
