| Physician and inventor, born in Charleston, South Carolina, USA. He graduated from the College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York City (1833) and took up residence in Apalachiola, FL. In c.1840 he conceived the idea of cooling the air in sick rooms and hospitals, and in 1851 he received the first patent for mechanical refrigeration in the USA. Unable to raise money to manufacture his new machinery, he suffered a nervous collapse and was unable to resume work. Florida placed his statue in the US Capitol. |
