| St Lucian politician and prime minister (1979, 1982–96), born in Canouan, St Vincent and the Grenadines. He graduated at the London School of Economics and was called to the English bar. In 1951 he established a law practice in St Lucia, and joined the St Lucia Labour Party, leaving in 1961 to form the United Workers' Party. At independence in 1979 he was St Lucia's first prime minister. He was defeated in the same year by the Labour Party, but was returned in 1982, and narrowly re-elected in 1987. |
