| Canadian statesman and prime minister (1957–63), born in Neustadt, Ontario, SE Canada. He studied at the University of Saskatchewan, and was called to the bar in 1919. In 1940 he entered the Canadian Federal House of Commons, becoming leader of the Progressive Conservatives (1956), and was elected prime minister after 22 years of Liberal rule. His government introduced important agricultural reforms, and extended the federal franchise to Canada's native peoples. He remained active in national politics until his death. |
