| Chartist leader, born in Newport, SE Wales, UK. A prosperous tailor and draper, he became Mayor of Newport (1836–7). On 4 November 1839 he led a Chartist insurrection designed to seize control of Newport, which was repulsed by troops with heavy loss of Chartist lives. He was sentenced to death, but the sentence was commuted to transportation for life to Tasmania. In 1856, given an unconditional pardon, he returned to a triumphant welcome in Newport. |
