| Catholic prelate, born in Fort Wayne, Indiana, USA. Ordained in 1898, he did pastoral work in Connecticut and Indiana, where he founded Our Sunday Visitor (1912), a diocesan newspaper that expanded into a large chain. In 1925 he began a long tenure as Bishop of Fort Wayne, IN (later archbishop). |
