| Anglican priest, born in Longworth, Oxfordshire, SC England, UK. He maintained the Church of England services during the rule of Cromwell, despite opposition. After the Restoration he was made Dean of Christ Church, Oxford, and royal chaplain. He governed the college strictly, restored its buildings, and installed the press. In 1676 he became Bishop of Oxford. He rebuilt the episcopal palace at Cuddesdon. The verse ‘I do not like thee, Doctor Fell’ is ascribed to Tom Brown (1663–1704), one of his students. |
