| Diarist and writer, born in Wotton, Surrey, SE England, UK. He studied at Oxford and London, and travelled abroad during the Civil War. He was much at court after the Restoration, acted on public committees, and became one of the Commissioners of the Privy Seal (1685–7) and treasurer of Greenwich Hospital (1695–1703). With Robert Boyle, he was a founder-member of the Royal Society (1662). His main literary work is his Diary, a detailed sourcebook on the social, political, and religious life of 17th-c England. |
