| biography:
| Colonial official, born in Chagford, Devon, SW England, UK. He landed at Salem and was in charge of the settlement there (1628–30) until the arrival of John Winthrop. He led a punitive expedition against the Indians (1636), which helped to bring on the Pequot War. As governor (1655–65), his Puritan intolerance and lack of tact led to a number of persecutions and executions of religious dissenters. |
