| Applied mathematician, aircraft engineer, and designer, born in London, UK. At 20 he became Claude Grahame-White's chief engineer at his flying school at Hendon, moving in 1917 to Boulton Paul Aircraft Ltd, of which he eventually became chairman and managing director. His aircraft included the Grahame-White Popular, Type XIII, and for Boulton Paul the Bobolink, Phoenix, and Defiant. His company specialized in hydraulic gun turrets and, later, power controls. He contributed significant papers on cybernetics, operational research, and ergonomics to the Royal Aeronautical Society. |
