| Shakespearean scholar, born in Mortlake, Surrey, SE England, UK. He studied at Cambridge, spent some years as teacher, lecturer, and an inspector of adult education, then became professor of education at London (1924–35), and of English literature at Edinburgh (1935–45). Best known for his Shakespearean studies, he was editor of the New Shakespeare series (1919–66), and a keen advocate of literary education. His works include Life in Shakespeare's England (1911), The Essential Shakespeare (1932), and Shakespeare's Sonnets - An Introduction for Historians and Others (1963). |
