| Oceanographer, born in Spokane, Washington, USA. He worked as an engineer before joining the Scripps Institute of Oceanography (1948–74), and was named director of the University of California's Institute of Marine Research (1971). A marine ecologist and US government and military adviser, he developed deep-moored unmanned instrument stations, and devised the dating of prehistoric oceanographic events by investigating marine sediments. |
