| biography:
| Businessman, born in Melbourne, Victoria, SE Australia. He studied at Melbourne University, and in 1972 formed a consortium to acquire Henry Jones (IXL) Ltd. A series of mergers and takeovers followed, first with Elder, Smith & Co, then with Carlton and United Brewers, to form Elders IXL, later Foster's Brewing Group. He was managing director from 1981, then chairman and chief executive (1985–90) and deputy chairman (1990–2). He was president of the Liberal Party of Australia (1987–90), and rumours of his entry into politics have been constant. He became known as ‘the last of the beer barons’ when he was faced with bankruptcy proceedings in 1992. |
