| British stage director born in Derby, Derbyshire, C England, UK. He began as an actor in repertory and television, before becoming a director in 1957. During the next 20 years, he directed plays for the Royal Court Theatre, London, and became an associate of the National Theatre (1963–6). In New York City his direction of Equus won him a Tony award in 1974. He was director of the Metropolitan Opera, New York (1974–81), and also directed opera in London, Paris, and Hamburg. He co-founded the New Theatre Company in 1986. |
