| biography:
| Crystallographer, born in Nenagh, Co Tipperary, SC Ireland. He studied at Cambridge, and became professor of physics and then of crystallography at Birkbeck College, London (1937–68). He developed modern crystallography and was a founder of molecular biology, pioneering work on the structure of water. A Communist from his student days, he was active in international peace activity during the Cold War. |
