| biography:
| Inventor and manufacturer, born in Rutland, Vermont, USA. He worked as a blacksmith until 1837, when he moved to Illinois. With a partner he designed a series of new ploughs, which sold modestly during the 1840s. He then designed on his own the first self-scouring plough, a major advance that made it substantially easier for farmers to break and turn the heavy soil of the Great Plains. In 1848 he built his first manufacturing plant on the banks of the Mississippi River, and by 1855 his factory was selling more than 10 000 units a year. He continued to manage Deere and Co, manufacturers of agricultural implements, until his last illness. |
