| Theologian and Tudor humanist, born in London. He studied at Oxford, travelled in Italy, then returned to England where he became a priest. While lecturing at Oxford (from 1496), he worked with Thomas More and Erasmus. In 1505 he became Dean of St Paul's, where he continued to deliver controversial lectures on the interpretation of Scripture, and founded St Paul's School (1509–12). |
