| Investment banker, born in Montclair, New Jersey, USA. He studied at Princeton (1951) and attended the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania. Joining the Wellington Management Company of Philadelphia (1951), he rose to become president and chief executive officer (1967–74). He later founded the Vanguard Group, a marketer of low-cost mutual funds, in Valley Forge, PA. He served as a director of several investment companies and contributed numerous articles to professional financial journals. |
