| Horticultural writer and architect, born in Cambuslang, South Lanarkshire, WC Scotland, UK. Apprenticed to a landscape gardener, he worked in London, and founded and edited The Gardener's Magazine (1826–43) and Architectural Magazine (1834). He was a major influence in London landscape and domestic architecture, and his major work was Arboretum et fruticetum Brittanicum (8 vols, 1838). |
