| Colonist in America, born in Nottinghamshire or Derbyshire, C England, UK. After emigrating to Holland in 1609, he joined the Pilgrim Fathers and became their agent for the expedition to the New World. He chartered the Mayflower, sailing in June 1620, and was elected first governor of the colony at New Plymouth, Massachusetts. He died within five months of their landing. |
