| Roman Catholic Archbishop of Westminster (1963–75), born in Ilford, E Greater London, UK. Educated at Ushaw and the English College, Rome, he was ordained in 1930, became a parish priest in E London, and during World War 2 worked with the BBC, when he was known as the ‘Radio Priest’. He became Bishop of Leeds in 1951, Archbishop of Liverpool in 1957, and Archbishop of Westminster in 1963. A convinced ecumenist, he was created a cardinal in 1975. |
