| biography:
| Union soldier, born in Woodford Co, Kentucky, USA. He trained at West Point (1848), and commanded a cavalry division during the Gettysburg campaign. On 1 July 1863, with a single brigade of dismounted troopers, he parried a heavy Confederate attack long enough to allow Union infantry to reach the battlefield. He died of illness later that year. |
