| Operatic baritone, born in Geelong, Victoria, SE Australia. He studied at Melbourne and Paris, where he made his debut in 1926. Nellie Melba then engaged him to sing opposite her in La Bohème at Covent Garden, thus beginning his distinguished international career. He was a regular soloist with the Paris Opéra until 1936, and a founding soloist with the Glyndebourne Festival Opera. He made his first appearance with the Metropolitan Opera, New York City, in 1937, and appeared there regularly until 1958. He then became director of the Manhattan School of Music. |
