| English naval commander, born in Shrewsbury, Shropshire, WC England, UK. He was master of the fleet at Beachy Head (1690), and at Barfleur and La Hague (1692). He commanded squadrons off Dunkirk (1693–5), and as a rear-admiral was commander-in-chief West Indies from 1698. In 1702, he came up against a superior French force off Santa Marta. For four days he kept up a running fight, almost deserted by the rest of his squadron, until his right leg was smashed by a chain shot and he was forced to return to Jamaica, where he died. |
