| First Roman Catholic bishop of Australia, born in Liverpool, Merseyside, NW England, UK. Ordained in 1819, he arrived in Sydney in 1835 and consecrated St Mary's as his cathedral in the following year. In 1842 he was made Archbishop of Sydney and Metropolitan of Australia, positions he was to hold until his retirement in 1875. He oversaw the growth of the Catholic Church in Australia into 12 dioceses, under a strong central administration. |
