| biography:
| Historian and Classical scholar, born in Co Monaghan, NE Ireland. He studied at Trinity College, Dublin, became professor of modern history (1893–1902) and Greek (1899–1902) at Dublin, and thereafter professor of modern history at Cambridge. He wrote a monumental History of the Later Roman Empire (1889) at the age of 28, and other major histories of Greece and Rome. |
