He studied civil engineering at the City College of New York, but his interest in the Civil War and the pioneers of the American West led to his becoming professor of American history at Pennsylvania University (1883–1920). His chief work was A History of the People of the United States from the Revolution to the Civil War (8 vols, 1883–1913). |
