| Lithographer, born in New York City, New York, USA. He worked with Charles Willson Peale, travelled to France (1824), where he learned the technique of lithography, and established a lithography business in Boston (1825) and then in New York City (1829). After selling the business to his pupil, Nathaniel Currier (1834), he became a carpenter and established a planing mill (1835–51). He is recognized as the founder of the lithographic process in America. |
