| US attorney general, born in Chicago, IL. He studied at Yale University (1964) and trained as a lawyer at Chicago (1967), then taught business law at Southwest Missouri State University (1968–73). He became Missouri's state auditor (1973–4), assistant attorney general (1975–6), and attorney general (1976–84). Elected governor of Missouri for two terms (1984–92), he then entered the Senate (Republican, 1994–2000). His strongly conservative and religious background made him a controversial appointment as attorney general by George W Bush in 2001. |
