| biography:
| American soldier and explorer, born in New Jersey, USA. He was a militia officer in the American Revolution and then served in the regular army (1784–93). He commanded Fort Pitt (1785–6) and was sent on a secret government exploration mission into Spanish territory and up the Missouri River (1790). He fought heroically in General Harmar's Indian campaign (1790) and later served as treasurer of the Northwest Territory. |
